Six-Week Spring Season Opens May 1 Highlighted by the May 10 Spring Gala Performance Featuring World Premiere Ballets by Martins, Millepied, and a Major Revival of George Balanchine’s "Symphony in C"

New York City Ballet will open its 2011-2012 season at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, September 13, with the return of Peter Martins’ full-length production of Swan Lake.  The season will feature four weeks of performances in the fall, September 13 through October 9, 2011; five weeks of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, November 25 through December 31, 2011; six weeks of performances in the winter, January 17 through February 26, 2012; and six weeks of performances in the spring, May 1 through June 10, 2012.

The longest home season of any dance company in the world, over the course of 21 weeks NYCB’s 91 dancers and 62-piece orchestra will present a total of 159 performances, featuring 55 different ballets from its unparalleled repertory, including 29 works by George Balanchine and 10 works by Jerome Robbins.  The season will also feature five full-length favorites, including George Balanchine’s Jewels and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Martins’ Swan Lake and Romeo + Juliet, and Susan Stroman’s Double Feature.

New York City Ballet will open its four-week fall season on Tuesday, September 13 with the return of Peter Martins’ full-length staging of Swan Lake.  Set to Tschaikovsky’s beloved score, and featuring sets and costumes designed by the acclaimed Danish artist Per Kirkeby, the Company will present six performances of Swan Lake, which was last performed to sold-out houses during NYCB’s 2011 winter season.


The highlight of the fall season will be the September 22 Fall Gala, which will feature the World Premiere of Ocean’s Kingdom, a collaboration between Sir Paul McCartney and NYCB Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins.  The production will mark the first time that Sir Paul has written an original orchestral score for dance, and will also feature costumes designed by the acclaimed fashion designer Stella McCartney, who will be designing costumes for the theater for the first time ever.  Ocean’s Kingdom will also feature projections designed by S. Katy Tucker, and lighting designed by Mark Stanley. 

In addition to the September 22 gala performance, which will also include George Balanchine’s Union Jack, Ocean’s Kingdom will be performed four additional times during the fall (September 24, 25, 27, and 29), and five times during the 2012 winter season (January 19, 21, 24, 27, and 29).

Other highlights of the fall include two all Balanchine Black and White performances on Friday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 20, featuring Episodes, Apollo, and The Four Temperaments, as well as five performances of Balanchine’s full-length Jewels on September 28, October 1, 2, 4 and 7. 

On Sunday, October 9, the final day of the fall season, NYCB will also present a special farewell performance for Principal Dancer Charles Askegard who will retire after 25 years as a dancer, first at American Ballet Theatre, where he began his career in 1987, and then at NYCB which he joined as a soloist in 1997, becoming a principal dancer the following year.  The program for Askegard’s farewell performance will consist of Jerome Robbins’ In Memory Of…, and George Balanchine’s Diamonds (pas de deux), Episodes, and Western Symphony.

GEORGE BALANCHINE’S THE NUTCRACKER™ November 25 through December 31, 2011
This year New York City Ballet will present 47 performances of the holiday classic George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, from Friday, November 25, through Saturday, December 31.

Balanchine’s beloved production, which premiered on February 2, 1954, at the City Center of Music and Drama in New York, helped to establish The Nutcracker and its score as perennial favorites in the United States, evident by the now countless versions of the ballet performed all over the country.  NYCB’s acclaimed production is seen by more than 100,000 people annually and has been performed more than 2,000 times. 

Set to Tschaikovsky’s glorious score, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker features choreography by Balanchine, scenery by Rouben Ter-Arutunian, costumes by Karinska, and lighting by Mark Stanley, after the original design by Ronald Bates.  The production includes the Company’s entire roster of more than 150 dancers and musicians, as well as two alternating casts of 50 children from the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet.


New York City Ballet will present six weeks of winter performances beginning Tuesday, January 17 with an all Balanchine program consisting of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, and Who Cares?

The highlight of the winter season will be NYCB’s first-ever all Christopher Wheeldon program, consisting of three works by the British-born choreographer and former NYCB Soloist and Resident Choreographer.  The program will consist of a World Premiere ballet, the NYCB premiere of DGV: Danse À Grande Vitesse, and Polyphonia.

The all Wheeldon program will debut on Saturday, January 28 at NYCB’s annual New Combinations Evening.  Created to honor of George Balanchine’s legacy of new choreography, each year since 1992 NYCB has presented a world premiere ballet as part of the New Combinations Evening, 

In addition to the new work, which will be the choreographer’s 18th ballet created for NYCB, the all Wheeldon evening will also include the NYCB Premiere of DGV: Danse À Grande Vitesse.  Created for Britain’s Royal Ballet in 2006, the ballet features 26 dancers and is set to a score by composer Michael Nyman, with sets and costumes by Jean-Marc Pussiant.  The all Wheeldon program will also feature Polyphonia, set to ten piano pieces by György Ligeti, and created for NYCB in 2001.

In addition to the January 28 performance, the all Wheeldon program will be repeated on Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m.

Other highlights of the winter season include the return of Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s The Seven Deadly Sins, Peter Martins’ full-length production of Romeo + Juliet, and Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky’s Suite No. 3, last performed by NYCB in 2009. 

The season will also feature five all Balanchine programs, including a special performance consisting of Who Cares? and Union Jack which will be performed on Sunday, January 22, the 108th anniversary of George Balanchine’s birth. 

New York City Ballet will begin six weeks of spring performances on Tuesday, May 1 with an all Balanchine program consisting of Serenade, Kammermusik No. 2, last performed in 2004, and Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet.

Highlighting the season will be a Spring Gala celebration on Thursday, May 10, featuring world premiere ballets by NYCB’s Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins and Principal Dancer Benjamin Millepied, as well as a major revival of George Balanchine’s Symphony in C, featuring new costumes designed by Marc Happel, NYCB’s Director of Costumes. 

The one-time-only gala performance has been designed as a salute to France, with the new Martins ballet set to a commissioned score by the young French composer Marc-Andre Dalbavie.  French-born Milllepied will create a work to a commissioned score by composer Nico Muhly, one of his frequent collaborators, and the final ballet on the program will be the revival of Symphony in C, set to French composer Georges Bizet’s classic score.  Balanchine created the work for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947, and it was originally titled Les Palais de Cristal

The spring season will also feature seven all Balanchine programs, featuring such works as Concerto Barocco, Firebird, and Liebeslieder Walzer, as well as Balanchine’s full-length production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which will close the spring season with a week of performances from June 5 through 10.

The season will also include three all Robbins programs featuring In the Night, The Cage, Andantino, and In G Major; as well as the return of Alexei Ratmansky’s Russian Seasons, the choreographer’s first work for NYCB, which was created in 2006.

Susan Stroman’s full-length Double Feature will also return to the NYCB repertory for five performances from May 24 through 27.  Created for NYCB in 2004, Double Feature is Stroman’s homage to the silent film era, and consists of The Blue Necklace, a classic melodrama set to the music of Irving Berlin; and Makin’ Whoopee, a slapstick comedy set to songs by Walter Donaldson.

Subscription series packages for the 2011-2012 season, which provide savings of up to 20% off single ticket prices, are now available through the NYCB subscription office at 800-580-8730, and beginning May 31 will also be available online through the NYCB website at  Single tickets for all 2011-2012 repertory performances will go on sale August 8 at the David H. Koch Theater box office, by phone at 212-496-0600, and online at   Single tickets for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ will go on sale in September.

Once again this season the lobbies of the David H. Koch Theater will open one hour prior to curtain time.  In addition, for repertory performances, all Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., and whenever possible will include only one intermission.

Dance Theater Workshop presents the world premiere of Martha @…The 1963 Interview March 30–April 2, 2011

New York, NY, 2011 – Dance Theater Workshop presents Martha@…The 1963 Interview, a metatheatrical recreation of the legendary 92nd Street Y interview with modern dance icon Martha Graham and dance critic Walter Terry, portrayed by Richard Move and Lisa Kron, respectively. Performances run Wednesday–Saturday, March 30–April 2, at 7:30pm.

Staged by Richard Move, the production is based on an audio recording of the live, on-stage interview recently discovered in the 92nd Street Y archive. It reveals Graham’s iconoclastic persona and foreshadows her impending retirement with intimate reflections on her unparalleled career. Presented on the 20th anniversary of Graham’s death (April 1, 1991), The 1963 Interview marks the return of Move as dance’s “Grande Dame,” with a new incarnation of the celebrated Martha@… series. Lisa Kron, a Tony-nominated and Obie Award-winning actress and playwright, portrays the late charismatic Walter Terry (dance historian and critic, the New York Herald Tribune). The 1963 Interview also comes to kinetic life with Move’s longtime dancers, Martha Graham Company principal Katherine Crockett and former Graham Company member Catherine Cabeen. The work includes new-media scenic design by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo, lighting by Donalee Katz, and costumes by Pilar Limosner. A Bessie Award-winning video by Charles Atlas created especially for the Martha@… series will be on view in DTW’s lobby prior to each show.

Move’s acclaimed portrayal of Graham began in 1996 with Martha @ Mother, an ongoing dance event at a small nightclub in New York City’s meatpacking district. The events, hosted by Move as “La Graham,” featured both his monologues and versions of Graham’s dances, and also showcased performances by emerging artists and some of dance’s most prominent figures, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham, and Yvonne Rainer, among many others. Martha@… continues to be presented at numerous venues internationally, including the Hebbel Theatre (Berlin), Sadler’s Wells (London), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (Becket, MA), and The Town Hall (NYC), among others. Move starred as Graham in the feature film Ghostlight, which premiered at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. He is the subject of the forthcoming documentary Channeling Martha. Martha@…The 1963 Interview is commissioned by Dance Theater Workshop’s Commissioning and Creative Residency Program with the support of The Fund for Continuing Innovation.

About the Artists

Richard Move is Artistic Director of MoveOpolis!, which has been presented by Dance Theater Workshop, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Sitelines/River to River Festival, and other international venues. MoveOpolis! collaborators have included designer Patricia Field, visual/video artist Charles Atlas, and writer Hilton Als. Move’s The Show (Achilles Heels), originally commissioned, created, and performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Dance Project, had its New York premiere at The Kitchen, and featured Rasta Thomas and Deborah Harry of Blondie. His other choreographic commissions include works for the Martha Graham Dance Company, PARADIGM (Carmen DeLavallade, Gus Solomons, Jr., and Dudley Williams), American Festival of Paris, and the Opera Ballet of Florence, Italy. Move has created large scale, multimedia events for the European Cultural Capitol of France, Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. He choreographed Dame Shirley Bassey’s Diamonds are Forever at the Cannes Film Festival, and directed Isaac Mizrahi in LES MIZrahi. His films include Bardo, which received the 2009 jury prize nomination at Lincoln Center’s Dance on Camera Festival; BloodWork–The Ana Mendieta Story, recipient of the 2009 National Board of Review Award at the Director’s Guild of America; and the feature Ghostlight, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. These films have screened internationally at festivals, galleries, and museums. He choreographed the cult film Strangers With Candy, starring Amy Sedaris, Matthew Broderick, and Stephen Colbert. He is also co-founder of the legendary, long-running late-night cabaret Jackie60. This fall, he curated “Where is Ana Mendieta?”, an exhibition and symposium at New York University. Move is a TEDGlobal 2010 Oxford Fellow. Move received his M.F.A. in Media Arts Production from The City College of New York, and is working toward his Ph.D. in Performance Studies at New York University.

Lisa Kron’s most recent play, In the Wake, had its New York premiere at The Public Theater this fall, and premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theater last spring. Other plays include the 2006 Broadway production of Well, which earned two Tony Award nominations, including Best Actress for Kron. Well was listed among the year’s best plays by the New York Times, Associated Press, and Backstage, among others. The 1999 Public Theater production of Kron’s 2.5 Minute Ride received numerous awards, including an Obie. Kron’s other honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, Lucille Lortel Playwriting Fellowship, Sundance Institute Theatre Lab and NEA/TCG Fellowships, and awards from Creative Capital and Alpert Foundations. She is a founding member of the Obie and Bessie Award-winning theater company The Five Lesbian Brothers. Upcoming projects include a musical with composer Jeanine Tesori, and commissions from the Sloan Foundation with Playwrights Horizons. Kron is one of six playwrights selected for the American Voices New Play Institute at Arena Stage, Washington, D.C.

Catherine Cabeen is the Artistic Director of Catherine Cabeen and Company (CCC), a project-based contemporary dance company dedicated to interdisciplinary conversations and collaborations. Cabeen has performed CCC’s work internationally, and has received choreographic commissions from On the Boards, Spectrum Dance Theater, Moving People Dance Theater, Pig Iron Theater Company, Arc Dance Company, Lehua Dance Company, and the Cabiri, among others. CCC is currently working on Into the Void, an evening-length project to be performed at On the Boards in Seattle in April 2011. She is a former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (1998–2005), the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Pearl Lang Dance Theater, among others. Cabeen is honored to have been working with Richard Move since 2005.

Katherine Crockett has collaborated with Richard Move since 1996, performing in Martha@… and other special events. In Move’s piece The Show (Achilles Heels), she performed as Helen of Troy opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov as Achilles. She has been a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company since 1993, soloist since 1994, and principal dancer since 1996, performing leading roles in Night Journey, Clytemnestra, Circe, Frontier, and Lamentation, among others. She was invited by Vanessa Redgrave to perform Lamentation in Kosovo, and was interviewed and filmed performing this solo for the BBC. Crockett danced as Cate Blanchett’s double in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She has also had works created for her by Robert Wilson, Lucinda Childs, Martha Clarke, Larry Keigwin, and Susan Stroman. She has performed in The Gala of the Stars, the Cannes Film Festival, VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, and runway shows of Alexander McQueen and Victoria’s Secret.

Gabriel Barcia-Colombo is a new-media artist based in New York City. His work has graced group shows across the globe, from Europe to Los Angeles and Austin. Barcia-Colombo repurposes everyday objects like blenders, suitcases, and cans of Spam® into venues for projecting and inserting videos of people. His Animalia Chordata won honorable mention at the 2007 Prix Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, and his short films and animations have been featured in numerous national film festivals, including the Slamdance Anarchy Film Festival and the Brooklyn Waterfront Arts Council Film Festival. In 2008, he was awarded both the Concordia Career Opportunity Advancement grant and the New York Foundation for the Arts grant for video. Barcia-Colombo received his bachelor’s degree in film production from the University of Southern California and his master’s degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, where he now serves as an adjunct professor.

Donalee Katz has worked as a designer and production/company manager for contemporary dance companies, theatrical productions, and special events. Some favorites include Martha@…, Lisa Giobbi Movement Theatre, and Daniel Ezralow. Katz was operations manager for the Paul Taylor Dance Company, company manager for Dance Theatre of Harlem, technical director and lighting designer for Urban Bush Women, and a lighting designer and company manager for Columbia Artists Management. Katz has also worked for several special event design companies including Preston Bailey Entertainment and Set Design. She has worked with Richard Move since 1997.

Pilar Limosner’s costume designs include Richard Move’s Martha@… and many MoveOpolis! productions, Images for David Parsons, Karole Armitage’s Le Stances A Sophie and I Had a Dream for Ballet de Monte Carlo, The Dog is Us for Deutsch Opera, and Schrödinger’s Cat for the Ballet de Lorraine. Her theater designs include Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio and Ann Magnuson’s You Could Be Home Now, both at The Public Theater, and Ridge Theatre productions. Limosner’s costumes for feature films and television include The Yards, Ghostlight, Down To You, and The Guru, among many others.
