Season Continues With Music Director Steven Reineke Leading
Five Additional Programs Including Music of the Mad Men Era with Guest Artist Cheyenne Jackson on Friday, November 18 On Friday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, The New York Pops, under the direction of guest conductor Jack Everly, opens its 2011–2012 concert season at Carnegie Hall with a program featuring the music of legendary composer and lyricist Irving Berlin. Having penned over 1,500 songs—many of which are American classics, including “Blue Skies,” “How Deep is the Ocean,” “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “God Bless America,” “Cheek to Cheek” and “White Christmas,” among many others—Berlin is considered to be one of the greatest songwriters in American history. As noted by The New York Times, "Irving Berlin set the tone and the tempo for the tunes America played and sang and danced to for much of the 20th century." For this concert, The New York Pops recognizes Berlin’s tremendous contribution to American popular music with a program entitled Irving Berlin: Rags to Ritzes, featuring performances by a stellar line up of guest artists, including: Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast), Hugh Panaro (The Phantom of the Opera), jazz singer and pianist Tony DeSare, actor and dancer, James T. Lane (The Scottsboro Boys, A Chorus Line, Chicago) and singer Natasha Yvette Williams (The Mahalia Jackson Story, The Color Purple). Everly conducts an all-star cast in a stirring program that includes “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Blue Skies” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” New York Pops Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke returns to Carnegie Hall for his third season on Friday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m. teaming up with Cheyenne Jackson (singer, Broadway actor, and star of television’s Glee and 30 Rock) for a program entitled Cheyenne Jackson’s Cocktail Hour: Music of the Mad Men Era. Audiences will be treated to classic tunes from the 1950s and ‘60s performed by Jackson and The New York Pops. The concert will also feature a suite of music by David Carbonara, the official composer of the Mad Men series. Additional New York Pops performances this season include two holiday concerts with jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli and his wife, singer Jessica Molaskey, along with choral group Essential Voices USA (John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey Wish You A Swingin’ Christmas on December 16 and December 17); jazz singer Patti Austin’s special concert recreation of Ella Fitzgerald’s classic album of Gershwin songs (Patti Austin Sings Ella Fitzgerald’s Gershwin Songbook on March 16); The New York Pops’ performance of works from Academy Award–winning movie scores, including songs from Doctor Zhivago, Out of Africa, Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings, featuring Essential Voices USA (Hollywood Award Winners on April 13); and finally the Carnegie Hall Family Concert presentation of Jim Henson’s Musical World. For these final performances of the season—presented in partnership with the Weill Music Institute—the magic of the classic Muppets comes alive as The New York Pops pays a musical tribute to Jim Henson's great legacy through song and puppetry (April 14). About Steven Reineke Steven Reineke’s boundless enthusiasm and exceptional artistry have made him one of the nation’s most sought-after pops conductors, composers, and arrangers. As Music Director of The New York Pops, Reineke conducts the orchestra’s annual Carnegie Hall concert series, leads concert tours, recordings, and nationwide telecasts. Mr. Reineke is the newly appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Long Beach and Modesto Symphony Orchestras. Previously, he was Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, where for fifteen years he served as a composer, arranger, and conducting protégé of the late celebrated pops conductor Erich Kunzel. Steven Reineke’s notable guest conducting appearances include the Boston Pops, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and his debut at the Hollywood Bowl in 2007. Reineke is also an established symphonic composer, with his works most recently performed by the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
