STRATHMORE ANNOUNCES 24 NEW CONCERTS FOR 2011-2012 SEASON NORTH BETHESDA, MD Strathmore today announced the addition of 24 concerts in the Music Center and Mansion to its 2011-12 season. The crop of new concerts raises the total number of performances for the season to 100, growing what was already Strathmores most robust and full season to date. INDIGO GIRLS The Grammy-winning folk/roots rock duo makes its Strathmore debut with new material from the just-released album Beauty Queen Sister. With 12 million records sold and 14 albums, the iconic duo brings an, alchemical vocal blend and insight into the ways of the heart. Rays compellingly husky alto meshed with Saliers glimmering higher pipes...were made for each other, in a generous original repertoire...lovely (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). CREOLE CHOIR OF CUBA This voice-and-percussion choir is made up of Cuban descendents of Haitians who have preserved their language and traditions across centuries. Blending ancient traditions with gospel and folk music, this vibrant company has developed their own style that is sleek, theatrical, socially conscious and full of joyful life. The performers have eye-popping, African-patterned costumes and strutting, hip-grinding dance moves...exhilarating (The New York Times). LYNN HOLLYFIELD, SINGER-SONGWRITER Lynn Hollyfield blends her seraphic vocals [with] crisp guitar work (Washington Post) in this concert that surveys the musicians nuanced contemporary folk, blues, pop and jazz influences. ALLEN TOUSSAINT Allen Toussaints soul-of-New-Orleans sound helped set the mood for HBOs series Treme, and has been featured on recordings with artists such as Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Paul Simon. This concert reunites Toussaint with musical partner, Aaron Neville, whose new gospel album I Know Ive Been Changed features their most recent collaboration. A SKAGGS FAMILY CHRISTMAS Fourteen-time Grammy winner Ricky Skaggs makes this holiday season a family affair, marshalling the members of his own gifted family as well as his in-laws, the bluegrass masters the White Family. Staple carols of the holiday season such as Little Drummer Boy, What Child is This?, The Christmas Guest and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas will be imbued with the mountain sound of bluegrass. 5 BROWNS HOLIDAY CONCERT Dubbed the Fab Five by People magazine, this talented group of piano-playing siblings has sent three CDs to the top of Billboard Magazines Classical Album chart. The New York Post proclaimed: One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years. The 5 Browns share their musical gifts with audiences at Strathmore this holiday, with seasonal music from Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Mozart to Richard Rodgers and Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi. DAVE KOZ AND FRIENDS CHRISTMAS TOUR 2011 Smooth Jazz master Dave Koz and his cadre of talented friends, Rich Braun, Jonathan Butler and Candy Dulfer, spread their own blend of Smooth Christmas cheer with songs from Kozs classic holiday albums December Makes Me Feel This Way, A Smooth Jazz Christmas by Dave Koz & Friends and Memories of a Winters Night. DAVE BASS, GOSPEL SINGER Singer-songwriter Dave Bass soothes with traditional gospel. Arch Campbell compares his sound to Sam Cooke; audiences adore his original gospel compositions and his takes on classics. JIM BRICKMAN Holiday favorites that have drawn revelers around the piano for decades will be inflected with solo pianist Jim Brickmans signature rhapsodic melodies coupled with considerable stage charm (Boston Herald). He will be joined by special musical guests singers Anne Cochran and Benjamin Utecht, and electric violinist Tracy Silverman. RAMSEY LEWIS: The jazzman extraordinaire, winner of three Grammys and seven gold records, revisits his classic 70s album The Sun Goddess with his electric bandguitarist Henry Johnson, keyboard player Michael Logan, drummer Charles Heath and bassist Joshua Ramos. THE CAPITAL HEARINGS, A CAPPELLA With repertoire ranging from Renaissance motets to modern hits, this dynamic a cappella ensemble will share renditions of seasonal favorites with vocal jazz and contemporary arrangements. LENA SEIKALY Songs of the holidays will be delivered with style by buzzed-about vocalist Lena Seikaly, whose lush mezzo-soprano and clever phrasing have made her one of the local jazz scenes most promising performers (The Washington Post). BOHEMIAN CAVERNS JAZZ ORCHESTRA: The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra celebrates the holiday season with new arrangements and selections from the Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill songbooks and features the entire Nutcracker Suite adaptation by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. THE MUSIC PILGRM TRIO, TRADITIONAL JEWISH MUSIC The three musicians of this trio bring together three different worlds, adeptly moving through classical, jazz and traditional music of different countries with improvisational spirit, soul and true virtuosity. The trios program for this concert includes an assortment of Jewish music Israeli, Klezmer Freilakhs and Bulgars and Yiddish songs, as well as original compositions with Jewish, jazz and Latin-American flavor. BRYAN ADAMS Chart-topper Bryan Adams brings his signature 80s pop-rock sound to the Music Center stage with a stripped-down acoustic versions of his new work and iconic classics, including Summer of 69, Heaven and Run to You. YASMIN LEVY This Valentines concert brings Yasmin Levys blend of Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish music of Spain, with the fiery passion of flamenco, using every colour and pitch in her remarkable range the resulting vocal pyrotechnics are unforgettable (Songlines). She will share the stage with legendary Turkish artist Omar Faruk Tekbilek. HOT 8 NEW ORLEANS New Orleans own Hot 8 Brass Band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade. The band plays the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that has defined New Orleans quintessential sound. REEL AROUND THE SHAMROCK Eileen Ivers has earned the title the Jimi Hendrix of the violin (The New York Times). For this St. Patricks Day concert the virtuoso and her allstar band, Immigrant Soul, present quintessential Celtic music. KEVIN COSTER AND MODERN WEST Perhaps best known for his hit films The Bodyguard, Field of Dreams and Dances with Wolves, Costner brings the same star quality to the stage with his band, Modern West. His music career predates his celebrated acting career, and was sparked by meeting musical collaborator John Coinman in Los Angeles. Modern West marks the reunion of this musical duo, with Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb and Park Chisolm.
VIDEO GAMES LIVE This immersive concert event, a sellout smash in Strathmores 201011 season, features music from the most popular video games of all time. Top orchestras and choirs perform along with exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussionists, live action and unique interactive segments to create a concert for gamers of all ages. THE MUSIC OF BILL MONROE The stars of American roots music come together onstage to celebrate the centenary Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe. The show features the Travelin McCourys (talented sons of the great Del McCoury), singer-songwriter Peter Rowan and Tony Rice, a virtuoso of the flat-picked acoustic guitar. 2012 SPRING GALA AT STRATHMORE Over her more than 40- year career, Dionne Warwick has established herself as an international musical legend. Her reputation as a hit maker has been firmly etched into public consciousness, with more than 50 charted hits including Dont Make Me Over, Do You Know the Way to San Jose and Walk on By. Strathmores 2012 Spring Gala will survey this icons abundance of hits and Grammy-winning singles. BILLY COLLINS AND MARY OLIVER Dubbed the most popular poet in America by Bruce Weber in The New York Times, former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins is famous for conversational, humorous and witty poetry. Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver has been writing and performing her special brand of poetry, theatre and music since the 1980s. 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOSCOW SOLOISTS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Described by The Times (London) as without doubt, one of the worlds greatest living musicians, Yuri Bashmet is the pre-eminent viola player of the modern age, and the founder and director of the Grammy Award-winning Russian orchestra Moscow Soloists. The ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012 with a concert of Mozart, Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Brahms. For their Strathmore debut, they are joined by Latvian star cellist Mischa Maisky.
